when it comes down to long-term fasting people have their opinions but in this video I want to break down the true health benefits of a long-term fast I’m talking about a 24 or even a 48 or even a 72 hour fast I’ve done enough videos around the world of intermittent fasting it’s time we talked about prolonged fasting in some exquisite detail now mind you this is going to be a part 1 of 2 in the next video I’m going to describe the fitness & fat loss benefits but in this video I want to merely describe the overall health benefits and why everyone should at least do a long-term fast once every 3 or 4 months for good old-fashioned health benefits alright the first benefit we want to talk about is something known as a top of G now a top of G is something I’ve talked about in a lot of videos and it’s quite common in fact it happens in all of our cells every single day but it happens a lot more when we’re fasting what etapa G is is they sell recycling it’s a built-in mechanism of the cell to basically eat it’s not used parts basically using them for fuel so that it can create new more efficient parts of the cell you see basically these cells create new membranes that go around and eat all the parts of the cells that don’t need to be used anymore when these cells that are based in or these cells that are old and really decrepit not being used anymore accumulate they end up causing the body to become very inefficient they can cause damage in the body they can turn into free radicals but more often than not they just make the cells sluggish so when we can actually increase the ability of the cell to recycle itself we are really really making an impact I want you to envision it like this okay if you could look at your body and say hey I have excess body fat that I need to get rid of well what if you could actually utilize that body fat as a source of fuel and recycle it and perform better well that’s the same thing that is happening with a cell when it goes through a high-powered etapa G phase it’s doing just that the cell is utilizing its own fat for fuel it’s trimming the fat so to speak now when we’re talking about the brain in particular autophagy is extremely extremely important because the brain goes into a very cool neuro protective phase when etapa G occurs basically what that is when the brain starts trimming all the fat it ends up going into a very heightened sense of cognitive function our brains work better simply because they’re functioning more efficiently they’re utilizing themselves it’s very very hard for energy to get into the brain it’s a pretty metabolically inefficient process to begin with so when the brain can actually utilize its own energy it ends up being a lot more productive for all of us now there’s one other thing I want to talk about and that’s the world of liver function when it comes to etaf adji okay now I said I wasn’t going to talk about the fitness & fat loss side of things but this is too exciting not to tell our liver cells when they go through periods of etaf eg end up improving their rate of lipolysis dramatically now lipolysis is another fancy word for fat burning so what our livers are working better when our liver cells are actually recycling they’re burning more fat but does one more thing it also improves insulin sensitivity which means that you’re gonna have less of an impact from the carbs when you do eat them so yeah by not eating for a longer period of time you can make it so you do respond better when you do eat now enough about what etaf ejidos in the body let’s talk about the quick link when it comes to fasting there was actually a study that found that fasting for just 24 hours improved etapa G by 300% 300% just 24 hours so basically you are telling your cells to trim the fat 300 times just by fasting for 24 hours now additionally fasting for another 24 hours on top of that improve that by another 30% so basically if you’re fasting for 24 or 48 hours you can improve your rate of etapa G by 330 percent that’s pretty darn remarkable okay enough about cells eating themselves let’s talk about the next thing the next one is the immune system now when we look at the immune system a lot of us just think getting colds or just flat-out like trying to fight off the flu or maybe recovering from a workout but the fact is our immune systems are working overtime all the time and every single time that we eat every single time that we are putting things in our bodies our immune systems are having to go on high alert especially this day and age when we’re consuming all kinds different glycols fights we’re consuming all kinds of different toxins our bodies have to work overtime well USC did a study and what they found was that longer periods of fasting like 24 hours and up ended up dramatically increasing stem cell regeneration phases basically what that means is that stem cells were actually created simply by fasting for longer periods of time for those of you that don’t know what a stem cell is a stem cell is basically a cell that recreates life in a given area of the body for example someone that has a bum knee might go to the doctor and get a stem cell injection in their knee the reason that they’re going to do that is in the hope that it starts to bring new life back to the knee starts to put new cells they’re basically embryonic and brand-new stem cells well if we can stimulate stem cell production just by fasting it’s a much cheaper and probably a much more effective way than going to the doctor and getting an injection now when it comes down to stem cells another thing is that play something known as PKA now PKA is a specific enzyme and it’s not really required when stem cells are produced you see PKA increases as we age and as we age our stem cell development really starts to diminish so when PKA is lower stem cells are higher and fasting well it diminishes the levels of PKA enzyme in your body basically unleashing the ability to produce more stem cells so that’s a very very unique component of fasting now let’s talk about another side of the immune system that you may not even know of and that’s the fact that ketones have a huge huge effect on our immune system and when you’re fasting although you may not like to admit it you are in a state of ketosis people think ketosis and they just immediately think of pork rinds and high-fat foods all it means is that your body’s going into that starvation mode so it’s using ketones as fuel and in this particular case we’re talking about beta-hydroxybutyrate also known as BHB now Yale University did a study and they actually found that beta-hydroxybutyrate dramatically decreased inflammatory markers within the body now it does it through a couple of different mechanisms but in one particular that I want to talk about is how it blocks something known as the inflammasome nlrp3 now it’s a mouthful and you don’t really have to know exactly what it means but nlrp3 is an immune response that occurs when we have a highly contagious infectious disease so like if you’ve got the flu or if you’ve got some other kind of disease you’re gonna have high amounts of nlrp3 that are released the whole idea of this nlrp3 is to basically nullify the disease and basically put your body into standby mode where you get totally rundown you feel like you’re sick you feel like you’re tired well beta-hydroxybutyrate mitigates that now you may be wondering if you’re sick do you want this to happen but not necessarily but when you’re not sick you definitely don’t want that inflammable and since Yale University found that we decrease our inflammatory markers specifically with nlrp3 well we can find that by fasting we lower our immune response so we’re not having to feel rundown all the time the short answer is we’re resetting our immune system a little bit and giving our body a chance to recover the way that it should ok lastly I want to talk about digestion I’m gonna make this one relatively brief so I don’t run on but digestion is taxing on the body whenever we eat something it takes about 65% of our energy to break it down now most of us think oh cool it’s ramping up our metabolism not the case no it’s just borrowing from other energy stores so basically you’re getting 65% more run down every time you’re digesting you’re not getting a chance for your gut to heal and when your gut doesn’t heal your gut mucosal layer breaks down and when your gut mucosal layer is broken down you are much more susceptible to have big particles that normally wouldn’t get into the bloodstream get into the bloodstream and when that happens it can trigger autoimmune diseases which end up making you feel extremely fatigued and make it so you can’t be your best self so by literally giving yourself a break from eating you’re literally allowing your body to heal the digestive system meaning the mucosal layer that is broken down every single time you take a bite of food is finally getting a chance to recover at the end of a fast your gut is finally in a position to start metabolizing nutrients a lot better because it has finally had the opportunity to heal now quick note when you do break your fast your gut is still extremely sensitive so you want to make sure that you’re taking extra precaution to eat something that’s easy to digest at least for the first couple of meals so there you have it there is part one of long-term fasting how the benefits of fasting can reel ended up making you the best possible version of yourself I want to make sure that you In the brain, upregulation of autophagy is strongly neuroprotective while disruption of autophagy causes neurodegeneration. In the liver, upregulation of autophagy increases lipolysis (fat usage) and insulin sensitivity, while disruption of autophagy leads to prediabetes and metabolic syndrome.
