my first CEO told me that sleep is a crutch he told me that he’ll sleep when he’s dead and at the time I told him well it’s sleeps important it’s what makes us function and I was right sleep is important but he was also right – okay not that it’s a crutch but we can get by with a lot less sleep than what we think and I’m gonna explain it to you in a way that might make some sense I want you to do the math would you rather sleep for seven hours but really only sleep for fifteen to twenty minutes of each of those hours meaning you’re only getting 15 minutes of quality sleep for every hour that you’re asleep or would you rather sleep for four hours and get deep sleep for 45 to 50 minutes of that time and us as businesspeople our minds are always going 120 miles per hour in fact sleep a lot of times just becomes annoying because it’s just one more thing it’s almost a necessary evil that we have to get through in order to get to the next day where we can hopefully get some things done but the fact is a sleep is dynamic and what I mean by that is sleep how much sleep you need is always changing based on so many different things and it’s not always about input versus output if you ran a marathon today it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re going to need more sleep tonight than you did yesterday totally resting it’s totally dynamic it’s always changing hormones are adjusting everything is happening your body and you can’t predict it so one of the things is you know we always get stressed out in business over things that we can control we’re really good at stressing out about things that oh if I hadn’t done this this would be different or if I did this this would be different but we’ve all gotten pretty good at knowing that we can’t change some things so let me drill that into your head that you can’t change how much sleep you’re going to need it’s going to change from day to day so you need to focus on just going to sleep when you’re tired don’t make yourself go to bed early it’s not going to do yourself any good eat the right kind of nutritious foods eat the right kind of fats and you can find that guide in the description of this video but make sure that you’re prepared to go to bed don’t just try to put yourself to sleep because otherwise cortisol levels are going to elevate you’re going to get stressed out and cortisol is specifically designed to help alert you it releases adrenaline in fact you release cortisol when you get up in the morning you release cortisol when you get up in the morning so that you don’t get lightheaded and fall over so cortisol is not really what we want when we want to go to sleep we want to be as calm and relaxed as possible but we all know that as business people we aren’t usually calm and relaxed we’re usually hardwired to be go-getters so just relax get your work done go to bed when it’s time and don’t stress about going to sleep because honestly you can run on for hours you can run on four hours of sleep just fine and if it makes you feel better the journal of psychosomatic research actually proved that short optimized bouts of sleep are better than longer low-quality versions of sleep so hopefully this speaks to you and you can go and get a few hours of good quality sleep and go kick some butt tomorrow in the office and in life
