lactose is just the sugar that’s in dairy there’s a lot more to it than just that and a lot of it comes down to casein proteins so before I explain goat and sheep milk let me talk about the history of casein proteins and cow dairy so that everything makes sense and if you stick with me through this video it’s all going to click and you’re going to have a clear defined answer on what kind of dairy you need to consume so casein proteins make up about 30% of the proteins of overall cow dairy now what we have to look at is there are two different kinds of casein proteins you see years and years ago these beta casings were called a – casein proteins this a – casein protein was a relatively healthy protein it was five or ten thousand years ago coming from the cows over in Europe and it was a relatively healthy source but through a genetic mutation over the course of years about five or ten thousand years ago this cow dairy started migrating over to a different kind of casein protein this is known as a1 now this a1 beta casein is the kind of casein protein that is in dairy today and it contains something called B C m7 I’ve talked about it in other videos but B C m7 is the casein protein that has some pretty direct links with cancer but also has some direct links with digestive upset delayed digestion potential inflammatory marker increases and now there’s a speculation that it could be linked with mental disorders as well so what BC m7 is is a bioactive opioid peptide what that means is that it acts on the opioid receptors within your body you know what else acts on opioid receptors within your body morphine and heroin and those opioids are what make it extremely addictive so in essence that a one style of beta casein is extremely addictive which is why so many people find themselves addicted to dairy and addicted to cheese now in a 2014 study it was also found that B C m7 the active component in that a1 casein is directly linked to a proliferation of cancer cells in prostate cancer patients that’s enough for me to not want to be touching some modern-day dairy but now let’s transition into goat and sheep milk here okay so go to sheep milk let’s first talk about lactose okay because we have to cover that base a lot of people migrate over to goat and sheep milk because it’s a little bit lower in lactose and that’s true it’s about a quarter less lactose in overall milk which honestly isn’t enough to make a dramatic difference if you’re lactose intolerant but the cool thing is is that sheep yogurt so the sheep yogurt that’s made from sheep milk has virtually no lactose in it you see through the fermentation process that lactose is converted into lactic acid so if you’re lactose intolerant that sheep milk yogurt might be the way to go now additionally sheep milk cheese is about 99 percent lactose free because additionally through the culturing process it loses most of the lactose as well so there’s some benefits on the lactose side let’s talk about that casein okay I just talked about BC m7 I just covered all that ground talking about how there’s actual links and actual scientific research back links between BC m7 and a lot of disease states okay so goat milk and sheep milk both contain the original casein protein they contain that a to casein protein from 10,000 years ago meaning they contain a milk protein that hasn’t been genetically mutated over time it’s like taking a step back in time 10,000 years and getting a higher quality dairy so in effect is much healthier to be consuming goat milk and sheep milk than it would be to consume cow dairy simply because you’re getting the higher quality more bioavailable form of casein protein that does not have that B C m7 now if we wanted to get one step further and why Many people have problems digesting cow’s milk. Symptoms include bloating, gas, stomach pain and constipation. Chronic conditions can also be tied to this, such as inflammation and diabetes. Many of those out there who have inflammatory issues with consuming cow’s milk may not even know it because they have never gone without. So, are other kinds of dairy healthier, such as goat’s and sheep’s milk? To understand this we want to first outline why cow’s milk is so hard on the body.
Why is Cow’s Milk Detrimental to Health? Lactose has traditionally been highlighted as the main culprit. More recent research points to casein, the most common protein in milk, as a trigger. The kind of casein in your milk is dependent on where you live. Beta-casein proteins make up around 30% of milk proteins and come in one of two genetic varieties: A1 and A2. A2 is the original variety that all cows used to have, with A1 appearing somewhere around 5,000 – 10,000 years ago through a mutation found in some European herds.
BCM-7 is a bioactive opioid peptide which is formed in much greater levels when we consume dairy with A1 beta-casein when compared to A2 beta-casein. BCM-7 has been linked to delayed digestion, gastrointestinal inflammation, pain and bloating. BCM-7 is speculated to play a role in diabetes, heart disease, schizophrenia and autism. A 2014 study in the World Journal of Men’s Health found that casein promoted the proliferation of prostate cancer cells. To add to the negative health effects of cow’s milk found in Europe and the US, BCM-7 is a highly addictive opioid and thus encourages people to consume more dairy than they should, and makes it hard to give up.
-Cheese is mostly made up of casein – you will often find people saying they could never give up cheese. This addictive response is so strong that is has been compared to heroine in terms of the addictive strength and the mood disorders that it causes.
Goat’s and Sheep’s Milk:
Lactose: All contain lactose, with sheep’s milk and cow’s milk similar in amount of lactose. Goat’s milk has about ¼ less lactose. Sheep yogurt has no lactose as the lactose is converted to lactic acid during fermentation. Sheep cheese has most of the lactose removed during processing. Casein: Both goat’s and sheep’s milk have A2-like beta-casein, and thus their products are less addictive and much healthier than the cow’s milk normally found in the US. Sheep produce less milk, thus it is more expensive and harder to find. Goat’s milk has also been found to prevent anemia and bone demineralization. Goat’s milk has also been found to help the body utilize minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium. If you are having trouble with cow’s dairy, goat’s milk is the most readily available and nutritionally sound animal dairy to give a try.
