Symptoms of oxalate kidney stones include:
• Low back pain
• Flank pain
• Blood in urine
• Frequent urination
• Painful urination

The question is, why would someone have high oxalates in their urine?

Your body makes oxalates, and you can also get them from the foods you eat.

Oxalates help your body regulate excess amounts of calcium. This is also why many plants are rich in oxalates—if a plant has too much calcium, it can kill it.

High oxalates can be due to:
• Genetics
• Kidney weaknesses
• Gastric bypass
• Intestinal problems
• Consuming high-oxalate foods

The best things to do to avoid high oxalate are:

1. Take calcium – Calcium locks up oxalates in the intestines, preventing them from traveling to your kidneys. It’s ideal to have 250mg of calcium lactate before bed.

2. Take citrates – Citrates bind with oxalates, preventing calcium from binding with oxalates. Try lemon juice or potassium citrate.

3. Drink 2.5 liters of fluid per day. This helps lower the concentration of calcium in the kidneys.

4. Reduce foods high in oxalates.

High-oxalate foods include:
• Spinach
• Black tea
• Almonds
• Chocolate
• Soda/cola
• Soybeans
• Sweet potatoes
• Tofu
