drink this not that the keto Edition so what I’ve done is I’ve taken the top most common drinks that people talk about when they’re on the ketogenic diet and I’ve broken them down as to whether they’re good or bad and if they’re bad I’m giving you a solution I’m giving you an alternative so the whole purpose of this video is not to say that what you’re drinking is totally bad it’s to give you a better solution and it’s not to ruin your life or to make you miserable it’s literally to help you get better results that’s all there is to it hey if you haven’t already make sure you hit that subscribe button because you’re tuned in to the internet’ll leading performance and nutrition Channel and the leading resource for keto and fasting so make sure you hit that little subscribe button let’s get to some science let’s get to some facts here and help you guys out all right so the first thing I want to talk about is P protein versus whey protein so a lot of people consume whey protein when they’re on the ketogenic diet because it doesn’t have a lot of carbohydrates and in fact sometimes there’s only 1 or 0 grams of carbohydrates which would lead people to believe that it’s a perfect thing to consume when you’re on keto ok I’m not anti whey protein so let me get that out there first and foremost if you consume a little bit of whey protein while you’re on a keto diet I’m not saying it’s gonna totally kick yet a keto I’m not saying it’s gonna ruin everything I’m just saying that you might want to consider using P protein instead and here’s why ok whey protein elicits an insulin spike ok the Journal of nutrition and metabolism actually published a study that found that a little bit of whey protein elicited a higher insulin spike than white bread like literally so white bread is like ice high glycemic as you can get what happens is the whey protein absorbs so fast and has so much leucine in it that it actually spikes your insulin which could very well kick you a taquito for a short amount of time now again you’ll get right back in nakita that’s not the end of the world and there are some benefits to weigh but in my opinion going with a vegan protein or a pea protein is actually going to work better it still absorbs fast but it doesn’t have such a high concentration of leucine that it doesn’t spike your insulin so you’re getting all this absorption but you’re getting it without the insulin spike so even if you’re not vegan or you’re not vegetarian go with a pea protein it just works better and it’s actually easier on your gut to so you know take it from someone like me I eat meat I do consume dairy I’m not anti dairy but I would much rather go with a peep routine when I’m Kido it just works better okay next up and I think a lot of you’re gonna like this you guys know by now that I am a huge caffeine fan okay I love my coffee but I have to say if it was between cold brew and regular I would always go with cold brew okay a lot of people drink their coffee their regular coffee the problem is that when you actually brew coffee and when you go through that process it leeches a lot of the toxins out even if it’s organic you’re still getting a lot of the pesticides the first time those coffee beans are actually rinsed after they’ve gone through a roasting process and the whole harvesting process is literally when they’re brewing in your hot water so you’re getting all of that and you’re getting the acid which is really really just tough on the body but the benefit to cold brew instead of focusing on the negatives of the coffee ER but benefits of the cold brew is that the acid doesn’t leach in so it makes it a lot smoother that’s why it’s way way smoother that’s why it has a more powerful earthy taste because you’re actually tasting the coffee versus the acid but it has a higher caffeine content okay and it’s a more bioactive caffeine it’s not like just caffeine anhydrous like taking a caffeine supplement it’s good quality caffeine along with polyphenols that you’re getting with a coffee so cold brew whenever possible that is like my pre-workout straight up flat cold brew with nothing else added to it okay so go for that whenever possible again regular is not bad and I know when it starts getting colder out it’s not always fun to have cold brew but it will make a difference and then take it one step further and go with nitro nitro cold brew if you have that as an option that’s even smoother but also there is some evidence that’s showing that the nitrogen infusion could actually make the caffeine a little bit more available as well all right next up if you’re looking for energy throughout the course of the day don’t go for an energy drink okay you guys probably have seen my videos before where I talk about matcha matcha is the way to go okay it is up and coming it’s already gaining a lot of momentum but it is huge now especially in the ketogenic community and it has to do with the fact that is highly highly highly thermogenic okay so it gets your body’s temperature up and it gets it up fast and it does so all without a ton of caffeine okay we’re talking like between 40 and 80 milligrams of caffeine and we’re talking a caffeine that activates in the body a little bit differently we’re talking about very much so mental acuity mental awareness it’s a really good feeling but also cholecystokinin CCK boost the dopamine response within the body so it makes it so you’re not craving food so this is why it’s really good you getting the energy but you’re not getting the cravings as well plus you’re getting a direct impact on C CK C CK cuts cravings directly – so you have a double whammy so when it comes down to matcha there’s obviously a lot of different options but I’m a huge fan of using you hito matcha the reason that I use you hito is simply because hey I can get it in a little single to go pack that makes it super simple rip off the top pour it in some cold water or hot water and I actually have a sweet tasting matcha that not only satisfies the sweet craving but it keeps my cravings from coming back but I also get the energy now when it comes down to matcha one of the things you have to pay attention to is that matcha is finely ground baby green tea leaves okay so it’s all it is but has to be done in a very specific way they have to be grown in the shade so that they have a higher level of the chlorophyll and they also have a higher degree of photosynthesis that’s occurring at that specific point in time so how it’s harvested is critical so you heat o is known for its ceremonial grade matcha now ceremonial grade matcha means that it is of the highest quality so you’re getting very high quality green tea leaves that are finely finely finely ground you’re not just getting regular tea that’s been pulverized that’s a big big problem that we have you go to the store you get green tea it’s just been pulverized so I highly recommend getting this stuff it’s affordable it’s awesome and it’s down in the description below they’re also a huge sponsor of this channel and one of the reasons why I consume so much matcha so be a part of it too so the reason that we’re doing this over energy drinks o to be honest is simply because the energy drinks are gonna have the mystery sweeteners in them okay you’re usually looking at aspartame you’re usually tooken at acesulfame potassium you’re usually looking at sucralose just to name a few of them okay now what ends up happening with those like I’ve talked about before is you can have an excitotoxin response it may or may not spike insulin it’s hard to tell but worst off it’s the crash that’s what you’re getting with energy drinks and that ends up rebounding into cravings okay so you’re getting like this dopamine hit and then all of a sudden you’re falling back from it and you have to compensate for that some house you eat that’s why I go for the matcha instead of the energy drinks trust me less caffeine goes 10 times further than like triple the caffeine here with the energy drinks alright now we talked about the half and half alright I know you see that half and half in red right here and you’re thinking darn it Thompson’s telling me I can’t have cream anymore I’m not telling you you can’t have cream anymore all right you’re gonna have your half and half you’re gonna have your heavy cream I get it it’s Keo but I wanted to give you some better solutions here and maybe some things that you didn’t know existed so the hard part with half-and-half that you’re dealing with some very inflammatory things particularly something known as B C m7 so B C m7 is a bioactive opioid now what that means is it’s a specific peptide that actually triggers an addictive quality within your body now some might get upset from me for saying this because I understand different histories with different people but gram for gram casein protein that is in half and half can be more addictive than a lot of street drugs so that’s scary that explains why cheese and dairy becomes so addictive to us why we just want to consume more it’s an opioid response it literally has a bioactive opioid in it you just don’t want to get yourself addicted to cheese and to dairy but also it’s a very inflammatory which is why you don’t want to get addicted to it so my recommendation is go half and half just a couple times a week the rest of the time go with coconut cream okay so the stuff you get into cants the full fat coconut milk okay go for coconut cream whenever possible it’s got MC T’s in it and it’s easier to digest the medium chain triglycerides actually don’t even need bile salts so it doesn’t even require your bile so it goes straight into your system and gets converted into ketones and fatty acids that are used for energy in the body therefore it’s easier to break down less inflammatory also quick tip you can take that coconut cream and you can whip it literally like whip it with it good like that kind of whip it and actually have whipped cream same kind of way you would do it with heavy cream you can make whipped cream from your coconut cream so just a quick hack there now a quick bonus because a lot of people have asked about it sparkling mineral water okay do that instead of soda sparkling mineral water is awesome stuff simply because it already has the minerals infused to it so by the sparkling process minerals are getting added into this water so you’re getting some of the sodium you’re getting some of the potassium you’re getting what you need so sip on this stuff all day long that is perfect for keto in fact I would argue that it actually adds to the benefits of keto so I hope this breaks things down and answer some confusion that may have been out there if you have different drinks that you have questions about just put them in the comment section you guys know that I do my weekly round-up videos where I answer comments so perhaps I’ll answer some of Keto Beverages: Drink this NOT that on Keto- Thomas DeLauer… Drink this, not that, the keto edition. What I’ve done is I’ve taken the top most common drinks that people talk about when they’re on the ketogenic diet and I’ve broken them down as to whether they’re good or bad and if they’re bad, I’m giving you a solution, I’m giving you an alternative. The whole purpose of this video is not to say that what you’re drinking is totally bad, it’s to give you a better solution, and it’s not to ruin your life or to make you miserable, it’s literally to help you get better results, that’s all there is to it.

All right, so the first thing I want to talk about it is pea protein versus whey protein. A lot of people consume whey protein when they’re on the ketogenic diet because it doesn’t have a lot of carbohydrates and in fact sometimes there’s only one or zero grams of carbohydrates which would lead people to believe that it’s a perfect thing to consume when you’re on keto. Okay, I’m not anti whey protein, so let me get that out there first and foremost. If you consume a little bit of whey protein while you’re on a keto diet, I’m not saying it’s going to totally kick you out of keto, I’m not saying it’s going to ruin everything, I’m just saying that you might want to consider using pea protein instead and here’s why. Whey protein elicits an insulin spike. The Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism actually published a study that found that a little bit of whey protein elicited a higher insulin spike than white bread, like literally. White bread is as high glycemic as you can get. What happens is the whey protein absorbs so fast and it has so much leucine in it that it actually spikes your insulin which could very well kick you out of keto for a short amount of time.

Next up, and I think a lot of you are going to like this, you guys know by now that I am a huge caffeine fan, okay? I love my coffee but I have to say if it was between cold brew and regular, I would always go with cold brew. A lot of people drink their coffee, their regular coffee. The problem is that when you actually brew coffee and when you go through that process, it leeches a lot of the toxins out. Even if it’s organic, you’re still getting a lot of the pesticides. The first time those coffee beans are actually rinsed after they’ve gone through a roasting process and the whole harvesting process is literally when they’re brewing in your hot water. So you’re getting all of that and you’re getting the acid, which is really, really just tough on the body, but the benefit to cold brew, instead of focusing on the negatives of the coffee here, the benefit to the cold brew is that the acid doesn’t leech in. So it makes it a lot smoother, that’s why it’s way, way smoother, that’s why it has a more powerful earthy taste because you’re actually tasting the coffee versus the acid, but it has a higher caffeine content, and it’s a more bioactive caffeine. It’s not like just caffeine anhydrous like taking a caffeine supplement. It’s good quality caffeine along with polyphenols that you’re getting with the coffee.

So cold brew whenever possible. That is like my pre-workout, straight up, flat cold brew with nothing else added to it. Go for that whenever possible. Again, regular is not bad, and I know when it starts getting colder out it’s not always fun to have cold brew but it will make a difference and then take it one step further and go with nitro. Nitro cold brew, if you have that as an option, that’s even smoother but also there is some evidence that’s showing that the nitrogen infusion could actually make the caffeine a little bit more available as well.

I hope that this breaks things down and answers some confusion that may have been out there. If you have different drinks that you have questions about, just put them in the comments section.
