In this video, we’re going to talk about how sugar affects the body—specifically the immune system. High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) has a huge effect on suppressing the immune system. Hyperglycemia is even one of the big factors involved in the COVID situation that could increase the risk of mortality. 

How sugar affects immunity:

1. Inhibited chemotaxis 
Chemotaxis is the movement of white blood cells through the body towards where they need to do their work. 

2. Impaired phagocytosis  
Phagocytosis is the mechanism where certain white blood cells will ultimately kill pathogens.

3. Inhibited complement cascade 
Complement cascade is a series of events that can occur that will cause the bacterial membrane to burst. It helps kill bacteria.

4. Acidosis—inhibits immunity 
The pH will go down, which can inhibit immunity. 

5. Slows white blood cells moving through tissues 
White blood cells have the ability to go through the tissues, the lymphatic system, organs, and blood vessels. Inhibiting this movement can have a negative effect on the immune system. 

6. Blood flow diminished 
High blood sugar could destroy the vascular system. This can cause less oxygen throughout the body. With that, you could have an increase in pathogens that can live in that environment. 

7. Less innate immunity 
This is a part of the immune system that’s like a wall. Hyperglycemia can destroy the protective barriers.
